Something Weird on the PS3

by Nadia on April 28th, 2008

I once had a supply teacher everyone called “Staypuft.” She cried a lot. Then her son was arrested for manslaughter.
We all know that the Playstation 3 is powerful enough to become sentient and kill everyone within a mile radius. That’s what’s cool about it. What’s less cool is that games like the highly-anticipated Ghostbusters must be held back to make it as similar as possible to the Xbox360 version.

Terminal Reality President Mark Randel says:

“The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3. We’re keeping the game the same over both platforms so we don’t want to take out any features. (…) If we [were] doing a PS3 only game however, we could be doing a lot more. We could be pushing a lot more on the screen.”

The Playstation 3 seems to have to pause often to let the Xbox360 catch its breath. PS3 owners: Do you find yourself irritated that you spent loads on the system but have to settle for “less” because developers want the same game across the two platforms?

(This is an especially interesting case for Ghostbusters, which is being published across every platform that ever lived. Almost. Image copyright Terminal Reality)

That’s awesome! Now I get to buy a “dumbed down” version of the game.

If I wanted to play a 360 quality game then I would have bought a 360 instead of my PS3.

It does suck, doesn’t it? I feel like this generation’s been a bit awkward with cross-platform games. There’s such a big power difference between the PS3 and Xbox360…and then there’s the Wii to consider, too.

I wonder if the 360’s GTA is dumbed down too. Heard the texture popping is pretty bad there.

Yeah, supposedly the 360’s graphics get a little jumpy at times compared to the PS3’s. I also heard that it’s a four-gig download. D: Impressive!

Strangely, when the visuals are compared side-by-side, the 360’s look a bit sharper. Is it just me?

Supposedly, the PS3’s GTA 4 graphics are not anti-aliased. You would think that would make them sharper, though. ;) Either way, I hear that GTA 4 on the Xbox 360 looks better, whereas it moves better on the PS3.

I can’t play either version, because man that series gives me horrendous motion sickness.

Man, that’s tough Nadia. I have the same problem with my Half-Life 2, which remains unfinished to this day thanks to its effect on my body’s equilibrium. Strangely, I get the same problem with Bioshock. Some FPS blogger I am.

The GTA series never gave me any problems, though.
