Flat Rate For Downloads at Playstation Store, Sorta Maybe?

by Nadia on January 2nd, 2008

Siliconera has drawn attention to a survey Sony is running over in Asia. Visitors are challenged with: “Which of the following offer from PLAYSTATION®Store (PC) that you find it appealing?” The selectable answers include ice cream or cake. Well, no. The answers are actually serious business, including one option for a “monthly subscription plan”–a flat rate fee for unlimited downloads at the store.

Though Sony’s probably just putting the question out there, so to speak, it’s still an interesting idea. Paying one fee for unlimited PSOne downloads sounds pretty okay. Maybe Nintendo would be inspired to do something similar with the Virtual Console, but that would mean the company would be relinquishing part of its license to print money.

Good idea. Question: how much? I wouldn’t want to download Symphony of the Night for $100, even if there are other worthwhile games to be played.

Another question: are the PS games for download region-locked as well? If so, does that mean I can only run Japanese games if my PS3 is NTSC-J?

No one’s really sure how much yet. $10 seems like an awesome rate! Too bad it’ll likely be higher. I’d probably pay more for Symphony of the Night, but I’d follow that game off a cliff, so pardon my bias.

Good question on the downloadable PS games. I rarely pay attention to what’s region-locked and what’s not, but I’d say the most obvious answer is “Yes;” everyone seems to have a hard-on for regional encoding. I can’t even buy XBox Live crap with my husband’s American credit card–nor can I use a prepaid points card purchased in America. Then, of course, there’s the issue of Nintendo offering different Virtual Console games depending on what country you live in. Highly annoying times.

Sheesh, that sucks. I hope they do decide to cater to English-speaking users like me, even if my PS3 is NTSC-J. I’ve tried navigating in foreign-language game menus, and it ain’t pretty.
